Family Planning and Reproductive Health

Communication plays a powerful role in addressing behavioral barriers and shaping demand for health products and services. Uptake of short-acting methods of contraception and combined use of ORS and zinc to manage child diarrhea remains low in India.

Social marketing as a public health intervention has existed for several decades and is familiar to donors and governments in many countries. In some cases, it may be necessary to advocate for the intervention when its benefits and potential health impact are not well understood by local stakeholders.

Birth & Beyond is a smartphone app designed to provide mothers and caregivers with easy access to videos about a baby's first two years. The app helps support those with limited access to health care, an increasing problem worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Wise Woman's Diary entertainment-education video series chronicles a woman's experiences as she traverses the various stages of the post-pregnancy period. The series promotes birth preparedness, spousal communication, early decision-making and family planning methods safety--immediately after delivery and whilst breastfeeding.   They are designed to be shown in private health facilities in Lagos that serve post-pregnant women.  

While many Senegalese mothers visit health facilities to immunize their newborns, far fewer discuss family planning options with a health worker. Integrating family planning counseling into immunization services is a promising practice to address reproductive health needs in the extended postpartum period. A project supported by Ideas42 and IntraHealth developed a behaviorally informed model that integrates these two services to help more women access the family planning option that is right for them.

The project conducted formative research to systematically define a behavioral problem, drawing from health facility observations, interviews with key stakeholders, and discussions with partners. These insights led Breakthrough ACTION to develop the following behavioral problem statement: Providers do not counsel postpartum women on the full range of contraceptive methods in a way that women internalize. We want providers to consistently provide comprehensive FP counseling that resonates with their clients.
