Preventing Violence Against Women During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a global crisis that is exacerbating gender (and other) injustices and increasing violence against women (VAW). Activist organizations have an essential role to play during this tumultuous time. Sustained VAW prevention work remains vital—as does addressing the immediate risks to women posed by lockdowns and other COVID-19 requirements which can exacerbate violence, isolate survivors and limit access to essential services.

Recognizing the need for creativity and flexibility during this time, Raising Voices developed a series of practical Guidance Notes to support activist organizations in adapting and sustaining their VAW prevention activities. These are living documents which may be revised as the pandemic involves, intended for use by organizations with existing expertise in preventing VAW. While some aspects may be relevant for service providers, organizations primarily focused on VAW response services have distinct roles and considerations.*
